Oral Devices for Treating TMD
The temporomandibular joint is a complex joint that is responsible for moving the jaw. In most cases, TMD arises or is worsened by pressure on the joints. As a result, the devices we offer are mostly aimed at repositioning the mouth and jaw to relieve pressure. These are known as occlusal splints (more commonly referred to as bite guards or night guards). Splints provide a barrier between the teeth, reducing pressure on the TMJs and preventing activities like the grinding of the teeth, which can contribute to TMD. Depending on the level of damage and pain from TMD, as well as the contributing factors, you may need to wear an occlusal splint during the day or night or continuously.
